Personally as a huge fan of the Olympics
when asked to argue why it’s not a globalized sport and discover the negatives,
I was dumb founded. With 204 countries around the world competing, my original
thoughts were how could this event not be considered globalized and a positive
world wide event.
But once I looked pass the gold medal hype
and the inspiring stories about how people have fought back against the odds
and won gold. I started to delve into the not so pretty side of the Olympics….
The drug cheats and scandals place
unrealistic expectations on athletes, they turn to drugs to enhance their
ability in the ultimate goal to achieve gold. Every Olympics there a new
scandals and Olympians never seem to learn…just a few hours ago Olympiad
Alex Schwazer- let the pressure of games get to him and with his only
explanation being he had ‘expectations
that’s I had to dominate’. Stories like this take away from the fun and
friendly aspect of the games.
Olympics portray themselves as a global
event but infact they waste millions of dollars every Olympics to sponsor
smaller countries, to project this image to the world of it being a
global event. But this act of generosity is now being recognized as just having
token competitors from different countries, with no real expectation of them
doing well or getting close to getting a medal.
Also these developing countries, that only have one or two athletes competing- they will never have the funds to be able to host a Olympic games, so the same countries will keep recycling the duty of host? This is a downside to the Olympics and justify why it can be defined as a truly globalised event.
I found that your blog on the Olympics as a global event was good as it differed from the others i had read in that it examined the arguments contrary to the positives that the games apparently harbour. Indeed there are not so friendly aspects to the Olympic games which are completely overlooked by the media in their coverage- preferring to focus on inspiring stories and success rather than say,the most obvious signs of inequality; that being the most developed countries taking the majority of the Gold Medals.
ReplyDeleteA great blog to read! Your opinion in the opening paragraph is not only strong but practical, you express you view very confidently. I think the way you opened your point about the ‘not so pretty side of the Olympics’ is very effective because it is engaging. This will definitely keep your readers interested. I find when the negative aspects of a story or event are produced in a written piece it draws a lot of attention, the point you have raised about the drug cheats is good because it is controversial. This is why your blog works so well, you focus on the negative points of a big event like the Olympics, which the public might not always consider. Really well done!
ReplyDeleteThe content on this blog is actually really good and I guess that's what really matters , but it is boring to look at. You should add some photos, videos or something else to make the presentation better.
ReplyDeleteI liked reading you´re view on drugs in the Olympics! and i have to say i agree with you that part of the olympics really takes away the fun and the friendly aspect of the games. However i have to say that i do think The olympics is one og the greatest global events there is and i think that a lot of people chair this opinion with me. so the question mark you have behind you're title makes me want to read what arguments you have for writing that. Clever thing to do to make people more curios about you´re post. Good luck
