olympics.. a globalised event?

Personally as a huge fan of the Olympics when asked to argue why it’s not a globalized sport and discover the negatives, I was dumb founded. With 204 countries around the world competing, my original thoughts were how could this event not be considered globalized and a positive world wide event.

But once I looked pass the gold medal hype and the inspiring stories about how people have fought back against the odds and won gold. I started to delve into the not so pretty side of the Olympics….

The drug cheats and scandals place unrealistic expectations on athletes, they turn to drugs to enhance their ability in the ultimate goal to achieve gold. Every Olympics there a new scandals and Olympians never seem to learn…just a few hours ago Olympiad Alex Schwazer- let the pressure of games get to him and with his only explanation being he had ‘expectations that’s I had to dominate’. Stories like this take away from the fun and friendly aspect of the games.

Olympics portray themselves as a global event but infact they waste millions of dollars every Olympics to sponsor smaller countries, to project this image to the world of it being a global event. But this act of generosity is now being recognized as just having token competitors from different countries, with no real expectation of them doing well or getting close to getting a medal.

Also these developing countries, that only have one or two athletes competing- they will never have the funds to be able to host a Olympic games, so the same countries will keep recycling the duty of host? This is a downside to the Olympics and justify why it can be defined as a truly globalised event.
